Never Buy Philips

About a year ago I purchased a 27" flat screen Philips CRT TV. The model number was 27PT6441/37. It really wasn't a very good TV. It sounded like it was about to blow up every time I turned it on, and straight edges in the picture always looked curved. But it was cheap for a 27" flat screen, so I ignored the small problems.

Last Roll - 1.jpg

About 10 months later, it stopped working. Carrie was apparently watching it and it just shut off. We couldn't get it to turn back on. I looked up the warranty and it was only 2 months or so for parts and labor. It still had a year for parts, but I couldn't find my receipt so I just opted to go buy a new TV.

Since then I've had the broken Philips TV sitting in a room just taking up space. Yesterday I got the urge to open the sucker up and take a peak inside. It took a lot of work to get it open cause there were about 8 screws that required one of those stupid hex or star-shaped ends. I don't have a screwdriver with that end so I had to use one of those little L-shaped tools on all 8 of the screws.

Once I finally got all the screws undone and took off the back, I immediately saw a blown fuse right next to where the power connects to the main board. I took out the fuse and read the text 250V and T4E on it. I assumed that meant 250 volts, but I wasn't sure if that was enough info so I called my dad. He informed me that I need to know the amps the fuse was rated for, and also whether it was fast blow or slow blow.

Last Roll - 2.jpg

To get the information I needed, I turned to the internet. I did a search for philips 27PT6441 fuse. And found this blog posting. Turns out there is a large number of people with this same exact problem. The fuse is a 4 amp 250 volt slow blow.

Last Roll - 3.jpg

I jumped in my car and headed off for Radio Shack. We have two Radio Shacks in our town. Neither of them had the 4 amp 250 volt slow blow fuse, so I ended up just getting a 5 amp one. Did I mention how little I know about this stuff? But anyway, I was willing to take the risk since I had already considered the TV to be broken garbage, so I could care less if I broke it even more.

Last Roll - 6.jpg

I got home and carefully installed one of the new fuses. I was kinda scared that I'd touch the wrong thing and get a fatal shock from the capacitor. Luckily for me, that never happened. Once it was installed I plugged the TV in and instantly heard a charging-up sort of sound from the TV. I then hit the power button and sure enough the TV turned on as if there was never a problem. I put the case back on the TV and spent another half hour putting those stupid screws back in.

Last Roll - 4.jpg
Last Roll - 5.jpg

The TV is now working fine and I put it on our basement. I'll probably try to find the proper 4 amp fuse for the TV just to be on the safe side. Since the old fuse blows out, I know that at some point power will come to the TV that exceeds 4 amps, probably don't want to let that get through the fuse and screw up other more expensive things.

The really interesting part of this whole story is how many other people have had this problem. If you took a link to the blog posting I linked to, you can read all the stories of the people who were in the exact same situation. In fact, it's not just on that website. Check out these Amazon customer reviews of the TV. If you read the comments you'll notice that everyone who calls Philips gets a total run-around. Some people have stories where they had to keep calling Philips for like a month to get them to pay for it to be fixed. Some are even considering a class-action lawsuit.

Anyway, the point of my story is simple. NEVER BUY A PHILIPS PRODUCT. I understand products are going to have glitches, but it is totally unacceptable that people call Philips and are consistently told that there are no known problems with the TV. Philips surely knows this is a wide-spread problem. I've never seen such consistent negative problems for a product before. So stay away from Philips, seriously. Crap company.

Thank You
I read your webpage after reading dozens of others about the same problem with this tv. I told my husband, and he promptly ran out and bought some fuses. Lo & behold, the piece of junk works once again!!! THANK YOU!!!

Phillips 27"
My TV decided to stop working 1 month after the warranty ended. I just finished replacing the 99 cent fuse and it now works fine. Thanks for the advice. You saved me a lot of time and money. I'm in Canada and got the fuse at The Source by Circuit City. It's a 4 amp slow-blow 250v fuse. I second the "don't buy Philips" comment. They were very unhelpful for a company who has obviously heard more than a few complaints about the same problem.

Mine conked out a week after the 1-yr warranty expired !!! What timing... Anyways, I opened it up and there you go - a blwon-out fuse !! I hope that is the problem and will be fixed. Thanks to all the bloggers here !!!

BTW, you might want to check the power source coz thats what caused the fuse to blow out in the first place.

Philips TV's Blow!
Thank you so much for your story. I found your website on ecoustics.com.
In dec of 2004 I bought a philips flat screen 27", 2 weeks later it wouldn't turn on, so i returned it for another. 3 weeks later...same thing. Returned it for another. Last night this one now will not turn on. Since it has been over a year (by like a week!) I had to argue with them to cover parts. SOWHAT. They have to pay 50cents for a fuse and i pay 100$ for labor. With your info, I am going to try and fix the damn thing myself. I will never buy anything for Philips again. I wish I knew of this problem before hand. I guess I should of caught a clue after returning it twice in a month!
Many thanks!

Same thingq
I had the same problem. Had gone to Radio Shack and bought a pack of fast blow and slow blow. Used 3 fast blow before trying the slow blow. It worked fine. Talked to a buddy who repairs tv's and said probably was a incoming surge as someone else had mentioned. Am going to get a power strip now. Nice write up and explanation....

re:Still NOT WoRKIng ?!
My Philips 27 inch Flat Screen (same model number) stopped working on Christmas Eve 2005. We purchased it originally in August 04. Typical - warranty just expired! We got a bigger screen TV (JVC) and the Philips one was sitting in a spare room. Today I decided to open the sucker up and look inside - what do I have to lose? Anyway, found the blown fuse, searched online for t4e 250v and came across this blog! I'm off to Radioshack or Best Buy now to look for a new fuse - wish me luck :-)

Fuse problem
Just had the same failure in my TV. Your right about the sound the TV makes when energizing...it's horrible. The TV isn't too bad for the money...just keep a supply of fuses on hand for future incidents. thanks for the post and the photos.

thx for the information
same story, my philip 27' TV died after 18 month. It's not worth for labour so I just open it with those L shape toys from dollar shop, and find the blow fuse. So I go for internet and is lucky to this site. Thanks for the information. Again, I will never buy philips' product. Trust me.

Travis Thanks a million,

Thanks Travis for detail information abt the fuse issue in Philips #27PT6441/37.

Philips sucks and I am not going to buy it ever again. I will also demotivate other from doin so.
Any way..... After opening the TV, I saw the old fuse from the TV. It had a thin wire in it. I was expecting the wire to be fused but the thin wire was still there in the glass fuse. I assumed that my TV had different issue. BUt when I compared the old fuse with the new fuse(Radioshack 4Amp 250V slow blow) I learnt the difference. The new fuse had a small thick lump in the center of the thin wire inside the fuse. Where as in my old fuse it dint. So i conculded that the fuse had blown off. I just replace the old fuse with the new one and my TV started in jiffy.
Thanks once again Every once.

Philips sucks!!!

Thanks Trav
mine went out yesterday and i was just going to go buy a new tv today and throw this one away. But i had to make sure it wasnt a fuse that was blown before i trashed it. Low and behold fuse blown with no amps labeled. thanks you the info.

well, I am having the same issue, but the fuse looks fine. should I change it anyway. I am really not happy with this product

I'm not sure what else to try other than the fuse, so it's worth a shot. If that doesn't fix it you'll probably have to give up on the TV or bring it in to be fixed.

Thank you Travis, I added you page to my favorites for future reference...you really did your homework, and it paid off for a lot of dissatisfied Philips customers (ex-customers!) Thanks again Rosi

My 27 inch Phillips went out like all the rest. I'll be heading to radio shack on Monday. Has Phillips acknowledged that their TV's are pieces of junk? Where is the recall?
Posted by Aaron at the time of 02:20:13 PM, Feb 21 2008
I went and got the 4amp 250V slow blow and put it in yesterday. The tv worked for a while then it went out again. Am I screwed or should I give it one more try with a new fuse?
Posted by Travis Emslander (www.travisemslander.com) at the time of 02:30:28 PM, Feb 21 2008
If it at least fixed it for a little bit then it must be the fuse. I would keep trying. If it keeps going out then I'm not sure what else to suggest. I used a 5amp fuse because I couldn't find a 4amp version, but I'm not sure if that's a smart thing to do.
Posted by Aaron at the time of 08:14:12 PM, Feb 22 2008
I put two new fuses in and both worked for a few hours that night and then blew the next day. This sucks why did a new fuse work for everyone else?

Hi Travis, Thank you so much for all the helpful information posted here. I have the same TV from Philips and it wouldn't turn on. Mine was almost 4 years old. I followed your advice, changed the fuse using a 4amp. I put the back on the TV, turned it on...now it turns on and I have a picture but NO sound!!! Any further advice for me?? Please!
Posted by Travis Emslander (www.travisemslander.com) at the time of 07:29:38 PM, Feb 27 2008
No, sorry, I don't. I really don't know anything about electronics, I only knew enough to see that the fuse was out on mine and replacing it fixed my problem.

you might want to take a second look at the wires, some can come unplugged during teardown

Philips TV
Travis,
You have saved me $$$ and a trip down 3 flights of stairs with this worthless Philips TV. Thank god it was a cast -off and thank god I saw your inexpensive solution. Thanks!!

Philips TV
Travis,
You are a lifesaver!! I had the problem you described after 13 months of owning my tv, lugged it to the tv repair shop 2 years ago and paid $56. Last night (two years later) it was dead again. The thought of getting that tv out of the house again was terrifying! I saw your blog and fixed the tv in minutes (I happened to have the correct attachment on my electric screwdriver). I can't tell you how you made my day. Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a detailed description of your adventure. Sincerely, Donna

Thanks Travis -- replacing the fuse also fixed my Philips tv.

If I remember correctly, there are 9 star-type screws that require a T-10 screwdriver.

I have the same problem.
It cost me $120 for parts and labor. 2 weeks later I took it back and replaced the fuse it was still under his warranty. 3 weeks later the power went out.
I took the back off and I guess I will change the fuse.
4amp or 5 amp which works longest.
Thanks
Ralph

THANKS!
This really helped...it took me about 5 minutes to take the screws off and replace the fuse. I was able to find the 4.0 A 250V slow blow fuse at the local Radio Shack. I will avoid all Philips products from now on...I still haven't received a response from customer service after 2 days.

Same Problem
Mine went out last week....Wow... first thing I did was to check the fuse with my Volt meter...Replaced fuse,reassemble...Fixed..By the way the fuse didn't look as if was the problem..The meter don't lie...

EXCELLENT
this tv has sat in my basement for 3 yrs. I paid $1.00 for the 4 amp fuse from a local tv repair store. Came home replaced the fuse and BAM! So I asked the repair guy how much he would charge and he said around 150-200.00 100 just to look at it. Stick it to the man lol!
